The West India Committee was granted a Royal Charter by King Edward VII in 1904. The holding of a Royal Charter reflects the high esteem in which the work of the Committee in promoting the common interests of the peoples of the West Indies, Belize, and Guyana together with those otherwise interested in the region, is held.
It is conventional practice to bestow upon members of a Royal Charter institution the right to denote such membership through the use of a suffix to a member’s name. By accepting a person as a member, the West India Committee thereby recognises that a member is worthy of such status.
Ranks of individual membership and the related suffix are as follows, in ascending order:
- Associates of the West India Committee (AWIC)
- Members of the West India Committee (MWIC)
- Fellows of the West India Committee (FWIC)
In accordance with the Royal Charter of 1904 as amended by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 1977, each member must be proposed and seconded by members of the Committee and thereby admitted in accordance with the Royal Charter.
