Like many of the West Indian islands at the outbreak of war the Leewards experienced the upsurge in optimism and patriotism in response to Britain&#8217;s declaration of war. Women also gathered\u00a0to organise donations of commodities such as the \u00a3250 worth Guava Jelly for Indian troops by Montserrat. In 1915 the Legislative Council of\u00a0<strong>Dominica<\/strong>\u00a0voted to spend \u00a34,000 on a state of the art quick-firing Vickers Biplane for the Royal Flying Corps.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_742\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-742\" style=\"width: 631px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/westindiacommittee.org\/historyheritageculture\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Screen-Shot-2015-11-02-at-21.48.36.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-742\" src=\"https:\/\/westindiacommittee.org\/historyheritageculture\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Screen-Shot-2015-11-02-at-21.48.36.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2015-11-02 at 21.48.36\" width=\"631\" height=\"342\" srcset=\"https:\/\/westindiacommittee.org\/historyheritageculture\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Screen-Shot-2015-11-02-at-21.48.36.png 973w, https:\/\/westindiacommittee.org\/historyheritageculture\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Screen-Shot-2015-11-02-at-21.48.36-300x162.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 631px) 100vw, 631px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-742\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">H.M. &#8220;Dominica&#8221;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The long depression in the price of agricultural products prior to the war had imposed hardship upon the islanders. However, the outbreak of hostilities in 1914 caused a sudden upsurge in the price of key exports like sugar and cotton. Plantation owners made huge profits as prices rose over 100%. Conversely the workers on the plantations saw their wages rise by only 25%. This led to an increase in trade union activity, a development which troubled officials who became concerned by rumours of islanders joining the revolutionary Workers of the World movement. \u00a0St Kitts and Nevis banned trade unions in 1916 sparking a political row. Riots broke out on Antigua on 9<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0March 1918 after plans were announced to change the way workers were paid.
