The History and Heritage of the Cayman Islands

Between 2017 and 2019, the West India Committee carried out a heritage project on behalf of the Government of the Cayman Islands London Office to raise awareness of the history of the Cayman Islands, one of the fourteen British Overseas Territories, as well as reveal the links both cultural and familial, between Cayman and the United Kingdom, and celebrate the anniversary of the grant of the Caymanian Coat of Arms.

This involved exploring the origins of some of the oldest families on the Cayman Islands, major events in Caymanian history such as the Wreck of the Ten Sail, the abolition of slavery and the large contribution of Caymanians in the Second World War, as well as looking at aspects of Caymanian culture such as their unique relationship with turtles and their pirate past.
